Ancient people used brass to make this kind of musical instruments and that's why the name “brass” came and is still used nowadays. Nowadays people also get to apply copper and silver in the producing of these instruments. Centuries ago people made the same musical instruments applying basically wood because a lot of people weren't able to produce it of metal. French horn, tuba, trumpet, cornet, trombone and flugelhorn are contained to the contemporary system of brass instruments.

The very first peoples have already known a technique of blowing horns and shells. Later on people decided to do special musical instruments of metal that were similar to horns. Those instruments were intended for military, hunting and religious goals.

The predecessors of contemporary brass instruments were hunting horns, military horns and postal pipes. Valve gear wasn't created at that time and those musical instruments might play only natural scale. Various timbres of sounds were played only with the help of lips of a player. All military and hunting fanfares and sounds appeared at those centuries. They were based on the natural scale and firmly settled in musical practice.

When a proficiency of metal working and metal produces production became greater, it became possible to create pipes for wind instruments of definite sizes and finishing. The notion “natural instruments” appeared with the development of brass instruments production and the improvement of diverse natural scales. There were no valve mechanisms, that is why such instruments could perform only natural scale. Guilds of trumpeters appeared at those times. They were separated into two kinds: court trumpeters that gave the performances in castles and marching pipers who were the military musicians.

XIX century became the century when valve gear was invented. This invention increased the ability of scales and the art of performance also changed. The point of that gear was in adding the crown in the main pipe. It changed the shape of instruments and the pitch was lowered.

In symphony orchestras brass instruments are in the main sections and in wind orchestras they are the fundamental ones. Different solo books are offered today worldwide for valve and natural brass instruments. Horns are also used in chamber ensembles. They also may apply other brass instruments but it occurs rarely.
