Any project manager works with four components: cost, timing, duration and quality. A more ambitious objective is to enchance work processes and resource attribution. Take your project and you will observe that it needs labour, money and tools to produce satisfactory outcomes. To supervise projects successfully one need to deal with several things. You can see a number of such factors in the list below:

- Setting objectives and carrying out analysis.

- Dealing with risk. Most feature a certain level of risk.

- Assigning and managing resources.

- Defining the results of the project.

- Controlling what is happening: assigning tasks, controlling execution.

- Managing adequate quality.

- Managing changes. Change happens. All projects develop in time, so the element of change has to be accounted for.

- Talking to everybody involved with the project.

Traditional ways of supervising projects, such a pen and paper, can be employed to do most of these things. But you get some interesting advantages if you decide to use project tracking software:

- It simplifies scheduling. Duration can be adjusted by the program depending on the workload information. Each worker can possess their own calendar. It also makes it simpler to track the work-in-progress on relevant tasks.

- Coordinating several projects with various requirements. Progress tracking software helps project managers to observea bigger picture and aggregate data on a number of projects.

- It helps you find the critical path. The critical path of a project consists of tasks that directly influence the real length of the project. If a task on the critical path takes more time than expected, the whole timing of the project will be changed. Whereas other tasks that are not on the critical path may take less or more time and not change the timing of other activities in this project.

- Distributing information to project participants. Complex projects demand a lof of communication. Groupware productivity tracking software allows each participant to be on the same page every time.

Is it always a must to use task tracking software?

Project management solutions could not be suitable in 100 percent of all cases. It delivers the greatest result when employed for a number of big projects. Little projects can be supervised using MS Excel which allows you to save on overhead costs of employing such complex software.
